old pension scheme: Since the implementation of the old pension scheme for government employees in Rajasthan, the demand for it is also increasing rapidly in the working class of Gujarat. Employees of departments like education, health, panchayat, revenue, etc. protested by tying black bands in more than a dozen cities on Friday and demanded the old pension schemes. The Gujarat Employees Federation organized a symbolic demonstration in Gandhinagar and various departments and employees' organizations in cities and towns like Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Valsad, Jamnagar, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, etc. With banners and placards in their hands, the old pension scheme in the state from the government. demanded to be implemented. The pensioners along with the employees protested the recent rules of the Gujarat government by tying black bands on their hands and demanding the implementation of the old pension scheme in the state. It is worth noting that Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had announced the implementation of the old pension scheme for government employees in Rajasthan last month. Since then the employees and pensioners of Gujarat are also pressurizing the government to fulfill this demand. The main difference between NPS and OPS is that while the former is a contributory mechanism, the latter is a defined mechanism. The government brought in NPS as the cost of pension payments was high. Under OPS, employees get a pension according to a pre-determined formula, which is half of the last salary. They also get the benefit of hiking in Dearness Relief (DR) twice a year. Whereas in NPS, the employee deposits 10 percent of the basic salary and dearness allowance. The Center has increased its contribution to 14 percent. State government employees will also get an increased contribution of 14 percent of the employer in the NPS account from now on. It will optimize the social security benefits of state government employees and bring them to par with central government employees.
