Department ordered the tax officers to accept the application The department has asked tax officers to accept applications for disposal of such cases by September 30 in this regard. In fact, the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961 have been amended through the Finance Act in the Union Budget for 2021-22. Under this, the Income Tax Settlement Commission (ITSC) stopped functioning from February 1, 2021. It has also been provided that no application for settlement can be made on or after February 1, 2021. The Finance Bill 2021 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on the same date. The government had constituted an Interim Settlement Board for disposal of settlement applications pending till January 31, 2021. Subsequently, the Finance Ministry had received applications wherein several taxpayers were in the last stages of filing applications before the ITSC for disposal of pending cases on February 1. In view of this, the Income Tax Department took this decision earlier this month, giving relief to the taxpayers. The judgment said that taxpayers who were eligible to file the application by January 31, 2021, could not file it due to the closure of ITSC, they can apply before the interim board by September 30, 2021.
